Before the visit

Patient should refrain from taking vitamins, or mineral herbal supplements for at least one week before sample collection.

0.5 mL packed red blood cells collected in an EDTA (lavender-top or royal blue-top) tube

Minimum volume

0.2 mL packed red blood cells • 0.5 mL whole blood

Also accepted

1 mL whole blood collected in: EDTA (royal blue-top) tube or EDTA (lavender-top) tube

Trace element and metal-free transport tube

Temperature

Refrigerated (cold packs)

Patients should be 18 years of age or greater. Centrifuge to separate plasma from RBC's and discard plasma. Transfer RBC's to a plastic transfer vial from a the lab (trace element and metal-free) collection kit or transfer to a transport tube.
